Is it time?
Is It Wax?
Wax build-up is uncomfortable and it doesn't usually clear on its own. Any of these sound familiar?
- Muffled or blocked hearing in one or both ears
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Earache or discomfort
- Ringing or buzzing that started with the blockage
- Itchiness inside the ear
- A hearing aid that whistles or has stopped working properly
Not sure it's wax? That's fine — we look before we do anything. If your ears are clear, we'll tell you and explain what's actually going on.
We use video otoscopy, so you can see what we can see before anything is done.

What Happens at Your Appointment
Microsuction is not painful, and nothing here is a surprise.
We Look First
Before anything else, we examine both ears with a video otoscope so we can see exactly what’s there and how much wax is present. The picture is on screen, so you can see it too.
We Choose the Right Method
We’ll use microsuction, which is gentle suction with no water, or irrigation with warm water at low pressure. The choice depends on your ears and your history, not on what’s convenient for us.
Removal
Removal usually takes a few minutes per ear. Most people say it feels strange rather than painful, and the difference in hearing is often immediate once the ear is clear.
A Check and Some Advice
We look again to confirm both ears are clear, carry out your hearing health screen and give you straightforward advice on keeping wax from building up again.
Does It Hurt?
No. Microsuction is not painful. You'll hear the suction, which sounds louder than it is, and some people find it tickles. If anything is uncomfortable at any point, we stop.

Most competitors skip this part. We'd rather you knew.
-
Why It's Safe with Us
- Carried out by a university-qualified audiologist with over 15 years' clinical experience, not a technician.
- Both ears are examined before and after removal, so nothing is done blind.
- Microsuction is the method used in NHS ear, nose and throat departments.
- Your ears are examined with a video otoscope before and after, so you can see what we saw.
-
Please Tell Us Before You Book If:
- You have a perforated eardrum or grommets
- You've had recent ear surgery
- You have a current ear infection or discharge
- You have severe dizziness or vertigo
None of these necessarily rules you out. It just means we'll want a quick chat first — call 01646 428420.

Common Questions
Ear wax removal at our Milford Haven clinic is £50, both ears included, with a hearing health screen as part of the visit. The online diary books it as a 15-minute slot. Home visits anywhere in Pembrokeshire are £65. The Ear MOT is the same price and runs for an hour, adding a full hearing assessment and a report to take away — ask for it when you call, as the form on this page books wax removal only.
The clinic is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, with Mondays kept for home visits. The online diary shows live availability, so you can see the next free slot and book it straight away. If you need to be seen urgently and nothing suitable is showing, call us on 01646 428420 and we’ll do our best to fit you in.
No. Microsuction uses gentle suction rather than water, and most people describe it as strange or ticklish rather than painful. You’ll hear the suction, which sounds louder than it feels. Irrigation uses warm water at low pressure. If anything is uncomfortable at any point, we stop.
Yes, please. Two or three nights of olive oil drops softens hard wax so it comes away quickly and comfortably, and it makes clearing both ears in a single visit far more likely. Drops cost a couple of pounds from any pharmacy. If your appointment is too soon for that, still come, but call us first.
Occasionally very hard or deep wax won’t shift in one go, even after drops. If that happens we’ll explain why, advise on further softening and arrange a follow-up. [CONFIRM: policy on repeat visits and whether a second appointment is charged]
We always look before we do anything, using video otoscopy so you can see too. If your ears are clear, we’ll tell you and explain what might be causing your symptoms instead. [CONFIRM: no-wax policy — what is charged if the ears are found to be clear?]
We offer both microsuction and irrigation, and we choose based on what’s right for your ears rather than what’s convenient for us. If you’ve had your ears syringed before, irrigation is the modern, gentler version of that. Microsuction uses no water at all and is the method used in NHS ear, nose and throat departments.
No. You can book directly with us online or by phone. Many GP practices no longer offer wax removal, so people often come straight to us. If we find anything that needs a doctor’s attention, we’ll tell you and explain what to do next.
Yes. Wax build-up is one of the most common reasons a hearing aid whistles, sounds muffled or seems to stop working, and hearing aid wearers are more prone to it. Bring your aids with you and we’ll check they’re clear and working properly once your ears are done.
Yes. Home visit ear wax removal is £65 and covers the whole of Pembrokeshire, from Haverfordwest and Pembroke to Tenby, Narberth and St Davids. Home visits can’t be booked online, so please call us on 01646 428420 to arrange one.
